Yesterday a fellow author and myself were discussing how to sign books. We both want to do something fun and creative, but can’t figure out what. When I’ve tried to in the past, I’ve thought really hard but still drawn a blank and, since that’s already taken me ten seconds too long, I just chicken out and sign the book with ‘Best wishes’ or something lame like that. This author then told me about an author she knew who would use the title in the signature, such as ‘Many Waters can’t wash away love’ or something along those lines. Pretty clever, I think. But how do you use Dragon’s Heart: that is the question? Whether ’tis nobler in the mind- wait, that’s Hamlet. Did I mention Hamlet’s one of my favorite stories? I’ve memorized sections of it, especially where Hamlet’s talking with Polonius about clouds. That’s my favorite scene. Gosh, if I were to be in a play, I’d love it to be Hamlet. I’d want to play Laertes, only he’s a man and I don’t think that would work out. Still, he’s got some of the best lines, drama-wise. Speaking of which, I’m planning to audition for a play in a few weeks. I hope to get a small part, but we’ll see how that goes.
Did I mention I got a summer job? I muck out horse paddocks for two or three hours every morning. It’s actually a fun job, and gives me a lot of time to think about my writing or philosophy- though honestly my thoughts aren’t always so esoteric. That’s good for my writing, but this job also messed it up too- it upset my delicate and precious schedule and now I spend less time writing. Not sure why; I still have plenty of time, even if I can’t stay up late anymore. I could use the excuse that I’m just waiting for my dad to catch up to where I am, but I know that doesn’t enter into it. Maybe it’s because I’ve hit the ‘less-interesting’ part of my book- NOT boring, you understand. Just less interesting. My comfort is first, that it’s less boring this time around, which means it’s improved, and second, I’m one chapter away from Part Two, which is where my favorite character finally takes center stage as he’s meant to. Once he does, the fun begins, in addition to the sarcasm, the drama, the sweet moments, and the general awesomeness. This whole world was born for him. Imagine that: having a whole book created just for you. I must really like him.
Anyway, aside from chores and such rubbish, most of my time is spent reading (a worthy pursuit) and watching either Doctor Who, Sherlock, or Merlin (a less worthy pursuit). Speaking of chores, I’d best be off to do those. Then I’ll probably play badminton and Frisbee with my siblings. Ah, the joys of homeschooling- I’m already done with school. And yes, I am bragging.
And before I go, I should mention that this author friend of mine I mentioned in the first paragraph, Gina Marinello-Sweeney, just published her book I Thirst, published by Rivershore Books, and I hear it’s totally awesome (I haven’t had the opportunity to read it yet). So go get it and read it. Now.
Have a day as awesome as you are, appreciated-blog-reader!
